The Story Behind Sunrise Fog
Sunrise Fog began with a winter morning viewed from my backyard in Tasmania. I was drawn to the vibrant colours of the rising sun and the way they contrasted with the fog settling into the landscape above a creek. It was one of those moments when a familiar view caught my attention and made me stop to appreciate what was happening around me. Growing up in Queensland, I didn’t get to experience the seasonal variations that I now experience in Tasmania. I have become fascinated by the changing light, colour and atmosphere that come with each season, particularly how the same landscape can look so different from one day to the next.
Working from my memory of a photograph, the painting became my interpretation of the scene rather than a direct copy of what the camera captured. I wanted to explore the contrast between the warmth of the sunrise and the coolness of the fog, while capturing the peaceful atmosphere I experienced that morning. Through this painting, I hope viewers are reminded of their own local landscapes or favourite places and experience a sense of peace, belonging and community.
