Artist Profile

Amanda Sutherland is a multidisciplinary artist based in Northern Tasmania. Her practice has grown from a long-standing involvement in theatre and performance and now encompasses painting, photography, ceramics and creative making. Driven by curiosity and experimentation, Amanda enjoys developing new skills and exploring how different creative disciplines can work together. Her current visual arts practice includes painting and photography, alongside an established background in costume and prop construction.

Selected Projects

The Aurora Project | 2026-present

An ongoing painting project documenting the development of Amanda’s painting practice through repeated interpretations of the Aurora Australis. Two works have been completed to date: Aurora 1, acrylic on canvas, 30.5 x 30.5 cm; and Aurora 2, acrylic on canvas, 30.5 x 40.6 cm. Aurora 2 was selected for display in the 2026 UTAS Student Art Competition.

Uncontained Water | 2026

A black-and-white photographic series exploring water through frost, liquid, steam and fog. The project is being developed as the final folio for Photography 1 at the University of Tasmania and explores photographic techniques and presentation methods that encourage viewers to experience water in personal and tactile ways.

Related Creative Practice

Amanda has approximately 15 years of experience creating costumes and props for theatre, performance and dance. Her practice includes original and collaborative costume design, construction, upcycling and the creation of practical and decorative props.

Cinderella – Star Rae Productions | c. 2022

Designed and constructed costumes for the production, including the majority of the principal cast costumes. Created an upcycled transformation costume for Cinderella that changed from a house dress into an illuminated ballgown during the Fairy Godmother scene.

Priscilla, Queen of the Desert Bus Replica | c. 2023

Constructed a replica of the iconic bus from Priscilla, Queen of the Desert for a local retail display created in conjunction with a local production of the musical.
