Costumes
In early 2010 I was just a parent to a dancer when my daughter performed her first solo. With no idea where to start with costumes, I bought her first costume and quickly discovered I still needed to make alterations and embellish it.
Deciding then to make my first-ever costume for my daughter’s next routine. Not owning a sewing machine I sewed the costume by hand, a feat I am proud of. Making a second costume by hand inspired me to invest in a small basic sewing machine. From there, I embarked on what is a journey of learning all there is to know about creating costumes.
Initially, using patterns you could buy at the fabric store, it soon became clear I needed to learn how to create my own designs as my daughter would come to me with a dance costume book, point at a picture and say “You can make that can’t you mum”.
I quickly learnt how to design dance costumes taking pride in creating designs specific to dance style, music and steps required in each routine. This resulted in very unique costumes for my daughter. One of the most challenging briefs came from the ballet teacher – “Celtic meets Lord of the Rings”. The design required research to create a costume that met the brief.
This grounding in costume-making has helped me to develop even more elaborate costumes since transitioning to the theatrical world.
For theatre, I have created costumes for shows involving children to adults. To date, the highlight of my costume journey is making a transformation dress for a production of Cinderella.
With a passion for costume design & creation, I would love to make your costume dreams come true.
